No News

Today was my appointment at the hospital to see the Consultant about my leg. The Compartment Syndrome is still as bad as ever, and a couple of weeks ago I had an MRI and today was to get the verdict.

Well, after an hours drive to get there and half an hours wait, I spent maybe 5 minutes with the Consultant! The MRI was fine and he has run out of ideas, so next steps are a referral to a specialist at a different hospital. Exit room and wait for a letter!

Whilst I was in town I picked up a bit of shopping.

It was raining, so I walked through the market – lots of lovely fruit & veg –

I picked up a prawn cocktail in M&S for my lunch, then headed home to eat it.

The afternoon I spent working at home, made a sausage casserole and headed out for a windy walk whilst it cooked.

Sausage casserole and cabbage for dinner – now I am very full – which is a good thing as tomorrow we fast again.

Tomorrow I am at the dentist – its all happening this week!

Scanned & Shopped

MRI day!

One of my pet hates is being late. Thanks to my inability to set the alarm properly I was late! My MRI was booked for 10am at the hospital 50 minutes drive away. I woke up at 9am! OMG! I have never run about so much in my life – no time for coffee – just showered and out!

Happily the traffic was light, so I got there with three minutes to spare. Phew! I was so stressed out! The whole MRI took about 45 minutes and interestingly the nurse stuck two cod liver oil capsules to my leg marking the top and bottom of the problem area. Evidently they show up as bright dots so the scan operator can ensure they have covered the area! Now there is one novel use for cod liver oil!

After my scan I went and sat with a cup of coffee in the hospital cafe. I really needed that. Then a quick stop at the supermarket to pick up a few bits before heading home.

It was lunch by the time I got home, but all the rushing about meant I wasn’t really hungry, so I had a bowl of French Onion soup. It was enough. Work all afternoon, then out for a walk – finally a bit of sun!

Fortunately for cars, and unfortunately for my pictures, they have started to cut back the hedges – such a shame.

I know it makes driving easier, but all those beautiful flowers are being destroyed!

Finally, dinner was welcome and wonderful! I did chicken wrapped in bacon (hubby’s was stuffed with Stilton), braised leeks and courgettes. Hubby also had a few mini-roast potatoes. The chicken, leeks and potatoes all went in the oven before we went in our walk, so by the time we got home they were all done bar the courgettes which I finely sliced and tossed in a wok with some butter. Yummy!

At home again tomorrow and I will try and sort the alarm clock out before I go to bed!

No Idea!

We nearly had a whole morning with no rain today! Nearly I said – it started just before lunch! 🙂

Today has been a work at home day, also another of spreadsheets – my favourite. This morning flew by and it was lunch before I knew it – ham and lettuce wraps today – Paleo and lovely. I also had a few strawberries with coconut cream. My first encounter with coconut cream and I have to say it is really good – much better than I thought it would be and a perfectly acceptable substitute – even hubby said so!

This afternoon I was back at the hospital to see my Consultant for another follow up to my operation for Compartment Syndrome. The title of this blog is dedicated to him! That was his answer to all of my questions – why isn’t it getting better? Why is the bottom of my leg still numb? When will it get easier to walk let alone run? He didn’t know the answer to any of them.

The conclusion he came to was to order an MRI scan to see if he can see anything. If that doesn’t reveal anything obvious he will try and get a second opinion from someone who is ‘interested’ in this sort of thing. The impression I got was that he thought they had done their best and that’s it. I can only hope the MRI shows something they can do something about.

Home and it’s still raining!

Dinner was been grilled gammon steaks and salad – okay, but I could have planned it better so as not to have had ham and ham! I’ll do better tomorrow.

Doing Nothing

It’s been one of those days when I don’t seem to have stopped, but don’t remember actually doing anything!

I did quite a bit of Internet reading this morning on Paleo eating etc, always a good way of losing an hour or three!

This afternoon I have had a clear out of the office, sorted the household accounts and prepared dinner. Then we went out for a short (2 mile) walk in the rain. My filthy messy hair looks even worse now! Never mind, hubby hasn’t objected, and no-one else is going to see me!

Nice to see the fields planted – no idea what with, but how neat it that!

Dinner took ages to prepare, we had a lamb joint that I studded with rosemary straight from the garden and slivers of garlic. I also did a few potatoes around the meat for hubby, parsnips, carrots and sweetheart cabbage. All lovely and fresh (and Paleo) and delicious.

Tonight I am sat. My leg has felt quite sore since the physio gave it a good deep massage. I also wake with cramp in it in the night – I think she has finally woken it up and it is starting to get better. I have continued the exercises, all of which make it work hard, so I suppose sore is to be expected.

Monday again tomorrow – but another day working at home for me. Office on Tuesday is going to be a real shock to the system!

Welcome to Summer!

Windy? It’s blowing a gale out there! I feel for those down here on holiday and camping, it’s also the Royal Cornwall Show today – poor things!

The rain has kept us tucked up at home today, so I resorted to taking pictures of my funny eye!

It is half brown, half blue – cute hey!

Work today was from home, so happily I haven’t had to venture out at all. I’ve done loads, and feel as if I have earned my crust today.

Food wise, I am sticking to Paleo – except I overdosed on nuts last night and ended up with chronic indigestion! I have done some research and it seems quite a common occurrence. The recommended remedy is to soak the nuts in water overnight – not sure about that – sounds soggy and horrible! I think I just need to be sensible about the volume I eat.

Today I had chicken and lettuce for lunch and then corned beef and salad for dinner. A bit boring, but tasty and filling.

Tomorrow I have my second physio appointment which I am really looking forward to. I have been good and cut down my walks, done no running, and have done my exercises and massage. I’m hoping she will be happy and give me a bit more to do!

Three Down, One to Go

Despite working from home today, I haven’t spent long at home today! I had a trip to my GP first thing – nothing serious! I had enough time to grab a coffee at home before it was time to go to my first physiotherapy appointment.

Since the operation for my Compartment Syndrome, my symptoms have actually got worse! I can’t run – it hurts too much. My shin is also numb which makes for interesting walking too. The lady I saw today was lovely. She listened and asked lots and lots of questions, and understands my goal to get back to daily running with no pain!

She measured my calves – the right (bad) one is 2cm bigger! Some of that is swelling, but it shows what a difference there is. She asked if I wore shoe inserts as I balance heavily on the outside of my feet – who knew? I have had a gait analysis done and told I was a neutral runner, probably worth me having that done again!

She said that I need to allow my muscles to heal, so to cut back on the walking and stick to flat and slow. She did some soft tissue massaging, which was painful, and recommended exercises to stretch the muscles. I also have to massage the shin to try and promote healing of the nerves. All excellent stuff. My next appointment is in a couple of weeks and I am hopeful! She asked me what my goal is – when will we know it is better? We agreed it will be when I can do our little 2.5 mile circuit pain free – how good would that be?!

I got some work done this afternoon, then we went for a little wander.

Strange weather – its been lovely and sunny all day, but sometimes it looks like rain!

The roadsides are so pretty now – full of all sorts of lovely flowers.

Food has been first class today! I made a three-egg omelette for lunch, then we had steak (sirloin) and salad for dinner. Nuts will be consumed later, but for now I am happily satisfied and full.

Tomorrow is the last day before our holiday, but I have to go to the office, so I can’t start to get excited until after work!

Paleo Eating

I’m no expert, but I seem to be doing alright on the Paleo way of eating. The miracle is that I got through last night without a single sweet or peanut!

Today I had turkey salad for lunch, a few walnuts mid afternoon, then ham and salad for dinner. I have eaten much more meat than I would normally, but still haven’t met my daily target. Robb Wolf’s Paleo Solution recommends 1g Of protein per 10lbs body weight – I weigh 148lbs, so should be eating 14.8g of protein per day – that’s a lot! I am trying though, and things can only get better!

I am preparing for tomorrow at the office and have boiled eggs! Plus I have turkey and salad, and a small bag of walnuts – we will see!

In other news, I have worked at home today and managed a walk before dinner.

Another nice day after the rain this morning, and of course it was nice to be out.

I face another night of getting through without eating sweets and peanuts. I do hope it gets easier!

See For Ever

What a view! This is taken from Ashriegney looking towards Exmoor – 4 miles into our 7 mile walk. Home is in the village on the hill to the right.

Lovely day in every way possible! The sun has shone all day, so we started with climbing that scaffolding again and giving the chimney another coat of white paint. That took us until lunch – when my trip into Paleo-land started.

Lunch was 2 poached eggs – hubby had his on toast – followed by an apple. Fine so far!

Then we took off on our mega walk.

What a lovely day for walking – nice bit of sun and a nice breeze. I wore Capri trousers and a running t shirt and was very comfortable. Three hours later we got home and I started dinner. Tonight we had roast lamb stuffed with rosemary and garlic, parsnips, carrots and cabbage. Hubby had roast potatoes, but I didn’t miss them, we had loads!

My leg seems worse today, the uphill sections were very painful, but I am pushing on in the hope it will get better.

Tomorrow it is back to work, but happily I am working from home. So far the Paleo diet is fine – I’m full but not bloated, satisfied and happy. Now I have to avoid the sweets and peanuts! This is not going to be easy!

It is necessary though, this week I hit 150lbs – that’s 10lbs I have gained since my leg operation. Action is needed!

Confined to Barracks

Rain, rain and more rain, which only temporarily turned to drizzle at one point, then it rained again.

I worked at home today, so I have had the pleasure of watching the rain pass swiftly by the office window. I was hopeful that it might just stop long enough to get out for a quick jiggle around the lanes, but no. No such luck. Today, therefore, has been declared a rest day. No bad thing as it is over a week since I didn’t walk or run for at least 2 miles. I’m resigned to enjoying a rest!

Lunch was soup again, with a ciabatta roll dipped in, then dinner was left over Spring Chicken with cabbage. Nice food, and pretty good (if you forget the bread roll!).

Today there has been good news and bad news.

The bad news – I’ve run out of coffee syrup – I know – disaster! I had a trawl around the internet and decided that it is probably one of those very rare items where buying on line is not the best option. Although you can get a big bottle for £6 ish, they all want another £5 ish for postage! I will have to take a trip into town and see what I can pick up.

The good news – after another phone call to the Physio department, and another ansaphone message left, I finally got a call back, and have made my first appointment. Sadly it is two weeks away on the 23rd of May, but at least I have an appointment. I’m hoping they can help and advise on my numbness down the front of my leg – we will see.

Not a very exciting day today. Tomorrow I am back in the office, so that should be entertaining!

Starting Over

Running that is. I need to get back running and stop this wimping out and just “going for a walk” rubbish. Today is day one. Gently does it!

Running shoes on, capris on, t shirt and I’m ready to go. Unfortunately it has been so long my Nike+ wristband had lost all it’s charge, so I had to take my phone and use the Nike+ App. We did our usual 2 mile circuit but as a run/walk combo. It took me a good mile to get into it, and by a mile and a bit I’d had enough!

Hubby pushed me along and we made fair progress despite the leg grumbling all the way round. The most pain was in my ankle – I’m guessing because that’s where the swelling is and all the rubbish has collected. You will be happy to learn I made it home and managed an average pace of 15 minute miles. WooHoo!

The other good news is that I got a letter this morning from the Physio department of the hospital. Strangely it just asked me to call them to make an appointment – makes you wonder why they wrote – why not just ring me? Anyway, I rang as instructed but just got an ansaphone – I left a message but I haven’t had a call back! Ho hum.

Food today has been okay, lunch was soup and a ciabatta roll and dinner gammon steak and salad.

Talking of food, I have ordered two Paleo books to further my research, and have a million podcasts on my phone to listen to. I’ll let you know how I get on!

Oh – I did lots of work too!
