Found Art

Another lovely day! I woke myself up coughing just before the church bells started! No chance of a lie in today!

We sorted ourselves out and headed to the Burton Art Gallery at Bideford. We have just become members (friends!) of the gallery and wanted to book on a day course learning to do woodcuts. Unfortunately the course is full, but there are enough people in reserve for the tutor to run another event if she wishes. We added our name to the list and hope she decides to do another.

While we were there we took amok around. There is a wonderful exhibition by Leonard Ruskin – lots of fabulously funny crows!

I just love those hairy knees! I love crows – magnificent, clever and social birds – and the subject of three of the books I have written for NaNoWriMo! Can’t beat a good crow story!

Having topped up with coffee at the Cafe Du Parc we headed to Westward Ho! beach. A lovely walk and a treasure hunt for ‘found art’. Don’t laugh! It’s a whole industry down here! We found some interesting burnt wood with nails in that I have turned into this –

A great branch and tin can –

And a whole bag of small bits of plastic – which necessitated us calling at Sainsburys on the way back for a giant vase!

I’m thinking we need to rename our house to ‘gallery’ and start our own exhibition! 🙂

Dinner was baked salmon that I marinaded in soy sauce, orange juice and rind, chopped red chillies and two chopped balls of stem ginger. Lovely!

Time to chill now as work madness starts again tomorrow.

Have a great evening and marvellous Monday!

NaNoWriMo Winner

Woop Woop!

Just 50,460 words written in 29 days. A whole day to spare – which is unusual for me, but I made it!

I have to say at this point, that the book is pretty awful, but that is not the point. The point is to WRITE – all 50,000 words in just 30 days. For all of you who have thought about/dreamt about writing a book, I urge you to try this, you will learn so much! Not least about how not to write! How a story that is massive in your head will end up being a few hundred words on paper, and then what? How many times you can actually write he said, she said. And how cute I am not, and do not, and they are actually look – after all – it is the number of words that counts! Most of all it teaches you that it does not have to take years and years. Just a couple of hours every day and a couple of proper sessions and it’s done in a month.

So, what are you doing next November? Plenty of time to plan – go check it out:

Normal service will be resumed tomorrow – I’m up for a celebration!

Is It Monday?

For some reason it feels like a Monday! Maybe because I had yesterday off, that would make sense, still it’s great that it is actually Wednesday because over half the week is done and dusted – nice!

Today has been an in-the-office day, so meetings were the order of the day. I did manage a trip into town at lunch though, so that was 90 minutes of walking under my belt. I wanted an apple peeler from Lakeland, but they had sold out – Boo! I did get some chocolate from Hotel Chocolate as Christmas gifts, and I called at Costa for a take-away skinny latte with and extra shot! Not a wasted journey!

I was lucky in that I got to and back from town whilst it was dry, from about 2pm onwards it has rained, ranging from “rain” to “tipping down” all afternoon. The drive home was not fun. Happily I am home for the rest of the week, so no more driving for me. Such a relief – I hate dark, cold, wet nights.

I need to write now – I am still slightly ahead of my target, but I won’t stay there unless I keep plugging away at it.

Enjoy – and have a terrific Thursday!

Christmas Shopping

That’s what I wanted to do today, but I ended up buying nothing. In past years I have done all my shopping on-line, but it is a sure-fire way of spending way too much money, so this year I decided to actually go into a shop and buy stuff. Well, I went into the shops but I bought the sum total of nothing. The majority of stuff was – well – tat. I know that’s harsh, but it was. Just expensive rubbish. I am not throwing money away on rubbish, so I bought it home with me.Internet shopping here I come!

We scoured the DIY stores for a new bathroom corner shelf. Who knew it would be so hard! Finally found one that will do the job, but the stores all seem to have ditched anything practical in favour of tinsel trees and plastic reindeer! Half way through the expedition we stopped at Nero’s for coffee and cake, just to keep our strength up you understand! 🙂 Then on to the supermarket for the weekly shop.

Finally home as dusk was falling – blimey we had been out nearly all day! A quick cup of tea, put the shopping away and it was time for dinner – prawn curry again, our Saturday night staple now-a-days.

Now I have to write – I need to keep up my 2,000 words a night to finish on schedule. If you miss just one night it takes forever to catch up. So, off to do some story telling.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring some exercise – I think I have put on a pound or two this week with my total lack of activity!

Have a wonderful Sunday.

Writing, Rain & Operations

I like random titles!

First the writing:

Nano 2011 Participant

Having gone through the 20,000 word milestone last night, I am now officially declaring myself a NaNoWriMo Participant! Now all I have to do is make the 50k by the end of the month!

After such a lovely summer and autumn it’s now decided to rain, and rain and rain. I know many people will welcome the rain, especially the farmers, but give us a break hey? No doubt the next problem that will come along is flooding – well, there is always something isn’t there!

Bad news today – I got a letter saying my operation had been cancelled – by me! I didn’t! It took me two hours to get an answer to the telephone, but I finally spoke to a very nice lady in Admissions who confirmed it had been cancelled. I was very upset – I was so looking forward to getting it fixed – I just wanted to cry. She carefully explained that the consultant asked her to cancel it on Wednesday, saying he had written to me to explain. He hasn’t – or at least I don’t have the letter yet. Something about doing more tests – WTF? I am already a pin cushion, had MRI’s and ultrasound – what now?

Not only is it very disappointing, but I have spent ages rearranging meetings at work, and booked a holiday over Christmas to recuperate. Grrr!

Now I have to wait to get his letter to find out what the hell is going on. The Admission lady said she tried to get to speak to him this afternoon, but he had gone home – at 2pm! She was sending him an email insisting that he speak to me. Nice lady – not her fault at all – I felt sorry for her. What a horrible job.

In other news, food good, exercise non-existent (see bit above about rain), work fine.

Tomorrow is Saturday and I am hoping for some proper retail therapy doing a spot of Christmas shopping. That will cheer me up!

This also cheers me up:

London May 2011 BUPA 10k 075

This little chappie was in Hyde Park in London during our visit earlier in the year – I gave him peanuts and he let me take his picture! So sweet!

Have a terrific weekend all.

This morning was one of those days where you wish you had a camera in the car – an no – the phone wouldn’t have done it justice! As I drove down the hill, the valley was full of fog – it was like being in a plane looking down on the top of the clouds. Better than that though, was the fact that it was misty above that, so the whole world was in grey and white, with just an impression of the trees looming through. Just beautiful.

Anyway – that should tell you that I was in the office today. Lots of meetings, mainly in tiny rooms with too many people – hot and airless. Pretty awful! I am desperately trying to avoid picking up the usual germs that circulate around the office environment so my surgery won’t get cancelled! I have washed my hands so many times today you wouldn’t believe it! 🙂

Food has not been as good as it should have been because I succumbed to a bag of cheese and onion crisps at lunch, followed by a chunk of chocolate. Oh well. They were both very nice! Dinner was better, hubby made a huge bowl of fresh salad with lettuce, cucumber, celery, tomato and sweetcorn, which we had with a slice of ham and a jacket potato. Lovely. I now know I have over eaten today though.

No run today – which means that we haven’t been out since Tuesday – that’s not good. It is really hard to get out when you finish late and it’s dark, and cold, and wet. Not terribly motivating!

On the book front, I am still on target – most unusual for me, I usually get behind by now, but I am enjoying the writing and the story is flowing nicely. I think I may be getting the hang of this you know! Last night I finished up at just over 18,000 words, hopefully tonight I will crack 20,000, which is a lovely milestone to reach.

If you had not realised, it’s friday tomorrow. Yeah! Then it’s the weekend – double yeah!

Have a good one!

Keyboard Madness

I really have to find myself a hobby that doesn’t involve a keyboard! I have either sat here (sofa with laptop on lap) or at my desk (with the big Dell desktop) all day long. Working, blogging, sparking and writing – oh – I did get out for a run!

Today started brightly, the antibiotics are working and my tooth feels a whole lot better today – very nearly “normal” if that is ever possible for me! I slept like a log, and woke bright as a button and ready to go.

SparkPeople first to catch up on my friends, who are all in the States and therefore all come out to play whilst I’m in the land of nod! Catch up done, work time. Coffee fuelled today as I had a lot to do. I popped downstairs late morning to throw some leeks and potato in a pan with some vegetable stock ready for soup for lunch. Back to work. Lunch, a quick whizz with a hand blender and we had a huge bowl of soup with some wholemeal bread. I do like soup!

This afternoon, back to work – all the way through until 4pm when I finally ran out of steam, just a brief interlude at 3ish to pop downstairs and make a curry for dinner. It wasn’t raining – but threatening to – so we put on our running gear, rain jacket, reflective bibs, hat and out the door for 3.5 miles around the block. I always think that sounds like we live in a town! We don’t! The “block” is out of the village and a circular route on single track lanes. We have three we can go on from here – one (2.25 miles) takes us up to the beacon via what we call “Cow Poo Lane” (it is!), across the top and down the hill back home. The first and last 100m are houses – the rest is just lane and fields (and dark!). The second (the one we did today), 3.5 miles and goes down the lane by our house, past a farm into a steep valley, up the other side, right at a T junction, up to another lane, right and right down the hill back. This time just one house to pass going out, and a couple in the village home. Finally there is the killer hill circuit, 3.5 miles again but – down, up, down, up, down up. All out in the sticks!

So, run done and curry cooked, a quick shower and eat. Since then, on the sofa with Lippy Laptop, SparkPeople again, the blog, then the exciting bit of writing for NaNoWriMo! I’m on target with my word count, but it takes discipline to get it all done. I’m enjoying it though, it’s a good story and I can’t wait to hear what comes next! 🙂

So, Saturday tomorrow – a nice lie in, shopping, no doubt a longer run and more writing. Lovely!

Have a wonderful day.

In a Whirl

Today has got away with me and it seems to have passed in a whirl! I haven’t done everything I wanted to today, but I guess some days are just like that.

I went to the office today, so up early when it was still dark, damp and pretty chilly. I can’t say it was cold – although it should be in November – it is still very mild. I did lots of meetings and still managed to avoid all the chocolate which is still hanging around. I’ve got over it now – it just sits there!

At lunch I took a 45 minute walk up to the shops for a look around, then back to munch my cheese salad and yogurt. I think the antibiotics are starting to kick in now – the tooth is not quite so bad and my tummy is starting to grumble! A sure sign they are working. I hope it stays at just grumbling, I can cope with that.

This afternoon, more meetings and then home to left over dinner from last night – Quiche and salad. I actually think it tastes nicer on the second day, but maybe that it just because it takes no effort to make dinner! Since dinner I have done my strength training and a little cardio, but no running today – that will have to wait until tomorrow now.

I’m working at home tomorrow, so thankfully a bit of a lie in and an early finish should start the weekend nicely. I have a very long to do list tomorrow, so I am hoping I can get it done by 4pm so we can run whilst it is still light. I hate winter nights! Still, the weekend is nearly here, and we can go out when ever we like then.

Time to write something. I am doing Nanowrimo! I started, so I will finish, and I will achieve the 50,000 words by the end of the month. I have 6,000 under my belt now, so I am on target at the moment. Fingers crossed it will stay that way – in the past couple of years I have managed to get way behind and then spent days typing. I have learned the hard way that doing the required 1,600 words a day is so much easier!

Have a fantastic friday – very nearly the weekend! 🙂

Five in Five

Yup – I ran again! Just short of 3 miles today – but a run is a run! That’s five days in a row. the bad news is that with the clocks changing it is now pretty dark by 5pm when I’m heading out for my run after work. I have all the right gear though, including a not very fetching reflective tabard thing. Still – it does the job and I have no excuse not to get out there just because it isn’t light any more!

I also did my strength exercises through the day – my wall push ups whilst waiting for the kettle to boil are a sight to behold! I also do squats whilst cleaning my teeth, and calf raises while washing up. No “I haven’t got time” excuses from this lady! Sixty minutes of exercise done!

I have eaten well, with soup for lunch with wholemeal bread and a yogurt, and baked potato, ham and salad for dinner. Amazing fact of the day number 2 – I hit my carb target! Go me!

I am hoping that all this effort will reap rewards on Wednesday’s weigh in – but who knows – my sales seem to have a mind of their own when I get on them.

It appears it’s also Halloween – so spooky stuff all over the Internet. I can’t quite get my head around how it’s taken off in the US – they seem to buy sweets like it’s going out of fashion! Can’t be good for anyone. Probably just another excuse for the marketing guy’s  make a few more dollars. Or maybe I’m just a grumpy old cow! Anyway, it’s absolutely tipping down with rain here – so that will no doubt keep the small people indoors.

Tomorrow it’s November. I know – earth shattering news! But seriously I have a big decision to make sometime in the next 24 hours – to Nano or not to Nano. NanoWriMo (National November Writing Month) is upon us – can I find time to write a novel of 50,000 words in the next 30 days, or am I just setting myself up for more stress? 🙂 I have done it for the lat three years – I’d like to do it again. Mmm. I’ll let you know tomorrow what I decide!

Until then – have a terrific Tuesday. I’m going into the office for the first time in a week – the early start will come as a shock!
